Did you see what happened in Texas last night? Wendy Davis’s Abortion Filibuster. That’s what happened.
And it was fricken fascinating! (I don’t get political often around here, but this was really interesting and I wanted to share it with you if you missed it.)
I think we all had to learn about filibusters in high school, but to see it happen, live, about such an important topic made it really interesting in my book. If you didn’t, you can read up on filibusters here. Her’s was a little different than the ones we hear about in DC because Texas has more specific rules than at the federal level, but she stood up (literally) for what she and her constituents believe to be right.
I didn’t watch the live video stream, but I did follow it on twitter (#standwithwendy). There were some really compassionate remarks that went along with it. Of course there were some real asshats too, but what else is new?
This was one where a Senator did their job and I commend her for doing so when it seems so few really do much of anything. While ultimately, her efforts fell short due to a technicality, the debate regarding rules, the cheers and general excitement and mayhem brought them to vote at 12:02am which was late enough to declare the bill in question dead.
It was a team effort to make this a success (for now) and I hope that Wendy realizes how inspiring she is. I’m curious to see what else this brings about…it’s an interesting tool in the political process.
**I will be closely monitoring comments today. Keep it to the topic at hand. While the filibuster was about abortion, this post is not and comments not related to the filibuster itself will be removed. While discussion and debate is absolutely allowed, hatred filled words and attacks will not be tolerated. Be nice people. You’ve been warned.**
