I don’t know about you, but I’ve been a fan of properly dried fruit for a long long time. I’m not talking about the kind they dry with whatever chemicals or desiccants they use. I’m talking about actually dried fruit.
Growing up, Mehmere had a dehydrator and we spent a lot of time waiting for pineapple rings and apple slices to dry in to the sweet candy like treats. Most often, we’d get them started and the move onto another project of either baking or sewing.
Perhaps it’s my inner nerd, but those were some good times.
I’ve been wanting to get a dehydrator for some time now because it can be difficult to find and often quite costly to buy dried fruit. At least the kind I like.
Frank came through for Christmas and I now have a dehydrator (complete with fruit leather dry tray!)
Life has been busy though and I haven’t had a chance until this past Sunday to try it out. I had some pears and strawberries that had seen better days so I pureed the pears and poured them on the fruit leather tray and sliced the berries and put them on a tray.
It took a few hours of me trying to be patient, but I was well rewarded with sweet treats. I didn’t photograph the pear leather because well, it didn’t look too appetizing, but rest assured, it’s tasty.
Now if you’ll excuse me, I have to go daydream about what other fruit I want to put on the dehydrator. Any suggestions?
