Cutting gluten, gouging coffee.

I as going to recap my weekend because it was quite nice, but it’s just not coming together for me. Maybe later.

Instead, I’m going to tell you that today I only get one 10 oz. cup of coffee. Crazy right? Partially because I might have had about 5 cups yesterday, but I average 3-4 cups a day and it’s really too much. After I finish the few sips I have left, I’ll be switching to herbal tea to keep warm this afternoon.  Considering my office is about 66*F I’ll be needing it.  (Decaf is not an option, it’s like creamy peanut butter – a total waste of time if you ask me.)

I mentioned Friday I was going to see how a month without gluten would leave me feeling. So far it hasn’t been all that weird or difficult. Sure it’s a little more work to do research before I head out the door (like finding list of foods from Panera) and reading more labels, but I have a feeling that as with most other things, this will become easy as I go. I don’t have to eliminate it entirely, so I’m not going nuts with it, but I’m being more mindful.

Don’t worry, this isn’t going to turn into a gluten free blog, but I might check in once a week and let you know how it’s going.

I’m three days in to this little experiment. It might be psychosomatic, but I already feel more clear headed and I’m down almost 3 lbs from the end of last week.  That might be a fluke, but maybe not. I also seem to have more energy than I did last week so maybe I won’t need as much coffee anyway.

To give you an idea of what I’ve eaten since Thursday:

  • Friday:  coffee with hot chocolate, milk and a kid sized cliff bar; sushi; corn pasta with sauce and sausage, home made fro-yo with hot fudge and cashews.
  • Saturday: coffee with milk and an apple;  chicken burrito bowl with guacamole and chips; left over pasta; popcorn.
  • Sunday: omelet (broccoli, bacon, mushrooms) and home fries; Autumn Harvest soup and Thai Chopped Salad; toasted rice bread with peanut butter and jelly.

I’m finding that some of the food in my cupboards is just dandy to eat. My popcorn, yogurt, and even some of the protein bars are good to go. I think the hardest part, so far, was finding a vegetarian option for Frank to make for dinner tonight. Our usual black bean patty or Chik’n all contain gluten which is a little sad, but we’ll manage. Tonight we’re having soup and some gluten free corn muffins I made yesterday.

Let me tell you. I married a good egg. He just goes a long with it. The gluten part that is. Coffee? That’s not going to happen.

Is this something people are interested in on an ongoing basis or should I just check in once in awhile. I intend to play with some recipes and continue to post my other ridiculousness too.  I’m also open to answering any questions about why, how etc, but that goes without saying.

I’ll be interested to see what you come up with! I just decided to try out low-sugar/low-carb (not cutting it completely but trying to skip the white flour and processed sugar) because I am a carb junkie. I’m finding it hard to snack, but then I get frustrated and skip the snack and find I’m fine without it. I need to blog about it here at some point.

  2. I always like to see someones progression.
Because there may be days that are AMAZING and some that JUST SUCK….

Do them as you feel… I’ll read each and every one!

Good for you. I totally believe there is a correlation between feeling better and eating less gluten. 100%
